A newly released video shows Sean “Diddy” Combs berating and kicking singer Cassie Ventura – his ex-girlfriend – in front of hotel surveillance cameras in 2016, before the rapper, music producer and businessman quickly settled the lawsuit she filed against him last November, according to footage obtained exclusively by CNN.
The video in question illustrates in the most graphic way possible one of the beatings alleged and described in Ventura’s case court trialwhich Combs vehemently denied.
Ventura’s case preceded the march of federal authorities attack from Combs’ properties in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a human trafficking investigation.
In footage obtained by CNN, Combs is seen leaving a room at the InterContinental Hotel in Los Angeles’ Century City neighborhood while holding a towel around her waist. He runs down the hall after Ventura, grabs her by the back of the head and throws her to the floor near a row of elevators.
The video, which has never been seen publicly before, shows Combs kicking Ventura twice and dragging her before letting her go and walking away.
Later, Ventura stands up, picks up some of his belongings from the floor and picks up the phone on the wall next to the elevators. Combs soon returns – still wearing only a towel and socks – and pushes Ventura into a corner as they stand in front of a mirror right across from one of the security cameras that captured footage of the assault.
He throws something at Ventura before leaving. The clip shows Combs walking back to Ventura when one of the elevator doors opens and someone apparently gets out.
A statement Ventura’s attorney, Douglas H. Wigdor, provided to CNN called the video “shocking.” Wigdor said the footage “further confirms Mr Combs’ disturbing and predatory behaviour”.
“Words cannot express the courage and fortitude Ms. Ventura showed to bring this to light,” Wigdor said.
Combs did not immediately comment on the footage, which starkly contradicts his previous vehement denials of Ventura’s claims.
Ventura’s lawsuit in November accused Combs of rape and severe physical abuse spanning more than a decade. She also detailed how he forced her to have sex with male prostitutes and used his network of powerful entertainment contacts to trap her in the relationship, which reportedly began in 2007 – when she was 19, and he at 37 – and continued intermittently until 2018.
Combs and Ventura settled the case a day after she filed it. The terms of the settlement were not disclosed, and comments about the settlement have mostly focused on how quickly Combs moved to resolve the case in a way that prevented him from even getting close to a courtroom.
Since then, Combs has faced several more lawsuits accusing him of rape, sexual assault, other incidents of physical abuse and distribution of “revenge porn.”
Combs has denied all charges while vowing to “fight for [his] name”. But one legal commentator on Friday predicted that the video released by CNN would hurt Combs’ chances of having the various lawsuits against him resolved in his favor.
“The video will embolden those who are suing Diddy on behalf of plaintiffs who have accused him of violence and sexual assault,” entertainment attorney Kamran Dowlatshahi said in a statement. “They will aggressively seek to have this video admitted into evidence if any of their cases go to trial.”
“It’s rare to have smoking gun evidence in cases like this, and this video is a form of smoking gun evidence regarding Diddy’s propensity for violence.”
The extent of Combs’ metastasizing legal problems became clearer than ever when federal agents searched his homes in Los Angeles and Miami as part of a human trafficking investigation. The 54-year-old three-time Grammy winner, once known as P Diddy, Puff Daddy and Love, spoke to authorities during the searches but was not detained, charged or restricted from traveling as he wished. his lawyer told the media that day.
Many prominent figures in the entertainment industry were quick to condemn Combs on Friday in response to the video of him beating Ventura.
Supermodel Emily Ratajkowski wrote“Monster,” on X’s post containing the video.
Singer Aubrey O’Day, who Combs once fired from girl group Danity Kane, separately wrote to X in reference to the video: “The picture is getting a lot clearer for you as I can imagine.”
