Victorian police officers strike for better pay as others up-and-leave for the Sunshine State

Exhausted and fed-up Victorian police officers are being targeted in a new Queensland recruiting blitz.
Attempts to lure Victorian workers to move to the Sunshine State come as Victorian workers went on strike and walked off the job on Monday, amid calls for better pay.
“I know one of my squads went (to Queensland) and was offered $20,000 to go there,” one officer told 7NEWS.

“When you hear all the fantastic conditions that our neighboring jurisdictions have, I don’t see anything that would entice members here to stay.”
Staff shortages meant some stations in Melbourne were unable to open, another official said 7NEWS they were called to fill in at the Flemington Police Department on Monday afternoon due to staff shortages.
Another station in Avondale Heights was forced to close its doors on Sunday without enough staff to stay open.
“You don’t join a job to get shit, acid, it’s all thrown at you,” said another officer.
“It’s emotionally and physically draining.”
Victoria Police has asked the Fair Work Commission to intervene in the ongoing dispute, which has seen some officers move interstate for better conditions.
The police union wants the force back to the negotiating table and is demanding a 24 per cent pay rise over four years.
More walkouts are planned for this week, but Victoria Police say they will continue to ensure frontline services are maintained during the strike action.
