[ad_1]

Living in a pre-war tenement comes with perks and quirks. On the other hand, you get solid construction, fairly good noise separation between units, and charming touches like crown molding and wood flooring. On the “weirdness” side, things are more likely to go wrong, including electrical network. One week I had not one but two power outages in my building that night, with power not restored until early the next morning.

Sitting in the dark with no entertainment is never fun, but I happened to have it Duracell M150 power station at my desk which is currently $40 off Cyber Week salesand that helped save the night. It looks like a giant two-tone Duracell AA battery with a copper accent on the top, it’s a charging hub with multiple high-performance USB-C and USB-A ports, a built-in light ring and a docking station that keeps it charged all the time. It’s currently $99.

The Duracell charging dock and light are the killer feature

The thing about most portable power plants is that you have to top them up periodically or leave them on all the time so they’re always ready for emergencies, at the expense of battery life. Such is the case with the Jackery Explorer 300 power plant, which I also own and have used as my primary power option. It’s a good device with plenty of runtime, but it requires me to turn it on and off frequently, which can be a hassle.

The Duracell M150 makes this process easy with the included charging dock that keeps the M150 charged when I need it. When my power went out, all I had to do was remove the dock from the charging stand and move it to where I needed it. The built-in light was also useful here. Unlike the Jackery Explorer 300, an unexpected outage didn’t make me reach for my phone’s flashlight. With the push of a button, it lit up instantly and I was able to find my way around my dark and cluttered apartment.

The light isn’t as bright as an emergency flashlight or camping light, but it’s more than enough to get it done in a pinch, giving me time to check the breaker box to confirm it’s not the cause of the trip and yes found some backup entertainment options like mine Steam Deck and Color Kobo Librawhile also serving as a desk lamp if I had to go to the bathroom.

Duracell also stands out for its size and weight. At only 1.8 pounds for the battery section and 0.6 pounds for the included charging dock, you can carry everything around without much trouble. However, it doesn’t have a carry handle like this one Jackery Explorer 300which would be a nice touch for added portability.

Is a portable power plant a good gift?

The Duracell M150 provides power when you need it, making it a great gift for those in areas more prone to outages. This could include places like Florida and the Gulf Coast, or even people like me who live in older buildings with more decrepit infrastructure.

With its combination of USB-A and high-performance USB-C ports and wireless charging stand, it can charge devices ranging from laptops and phones to headphones and smartwatches. There are also two additional models, the smaller and more compact M100 and the larger, more roomy M250, so you can choose which one best suits your needs. All three come with a charging dock and built-in light.
