A young British man died of injuries in a lift shaft during a family holiday in Turkey.

Tyler Carey, a 20-year-old worker from Basildon, Essex, was found on Friday morning at the bottom of a lift shaft at a hotel he was staying at in Antalya.

Carey’s uncle, Alex Price, said his nephew was found at 7am local time and pronounced dead at the scene.

“I got a phone call from my sister and she just said that Tyler was found in the hotel elevator shaft,” Price said. “An ambulance crew attended to him but unfortunately they were unable to resuscitate him and he was pronounced dead at the scene.”

A fundraising page set up by Price for his nephew’s funeral costs says he was “a young man full of personality, kindness and compassion, with his whole life ahead of him. He was totally devoted to his family and his girlfriend Molly.

Price said: “He had a steady girlfriend and they were thinking of moving in together.”

“They were very settled, he was quite a mature young man for his age, very compassionate and kind, caring towards his family members and younger siblings.”

Price said the family had been supported by the British Consulate in Antalya and a representative of TUI, which is the tour operator for the holiday.

He said they hoped his nephew’s body would be returned to the UK by Tuesday.

Price said the family is eager for a full investigation into the circumstances surrounding his nephew’s death. “Details are limited at this time,” he said.

“The family still do not know what happened and look forward to a thorough investigation to find out what happened.”

An FCDO spokesman said: “We are assisting the family of a British man who died in Turkey.”

The fundraising page has so far raised £4,800 towards Kerry’s funeral costs. It said his travel insurance would cover the cost of bringing his body home.
