Easy Street murder suspect Perry Kurumblis has been charged with two counts of murder and rape less than 24 hours after arriving in Melbourne after a marathon extradition from Rome.

The 65-year-old is due to appear in the Melbourne Magistrates Court this afternoon after being questioned by police this morning.

He was approved for extradition from Italy in late October, almost 50 years after Suzanne Armstrong and Susan Bartlett were found dead in their home in Collingwood.

The journey began at midday on Monday (Monday evening AEDT) when the dual Greek-Australian citizen was driven from the maximum security Regina Coeli prison in Rome in a blacked-out van.

He was processed at the city’s international airport by the man who arrested him in September on his arrival from Greece, where a statute of limitations meant he could not be arrested.

Kurumblis was brought onto the runway without handcuffs and loaded into seat 35E on Qatar Airways Flight 132 to Doha before the rest of the passengers boarded.

Victoria Police detectives took the seats next to him, and Dean Thomas, the head of Homicide, sat in the front row.

At 11.32pm on Tuesday, 13 minutes ahead of schedule, it touched down in Melbourne.

Earlier this morning, police said he would be questioned today before appearing in Melbourne Magistrates Court to face two counts of murder and one count of rape.

Kurumblis left Melbourne in 2017 after previously agreeing to provide a DNA sample during a re-investigation of the case.

He was considered a person of interest but was never charged.

He gave his own consent to be extradited to Australia in September, and his lawyer at the time said he maintained his innocence over the murders.

Armstrong and Bartlett, aged 27 and 28, were found dead in their home on Easy Street on January 13, 1977.

Both suffered stab wounds and Armstrong was raped.

Her young son was found unharmed in his bed.
