The son of a husband and wife who were found dead in their Sydney burger bar has been charged with their murders.
Alan Chiem, 31, has been identified as the man accused of killing his father, Hoa Teck Chiem, 69, and his mother, Kim Heang Gau, 68.
Allen was arrested about 12.30am today at a home in Canley Heights in Sydney’s west and charged with two counts of murder.
His older brother was at the scene when police stormed the home and arrested them, footage obtained by 9News shows.
The older man called the police yesterday morning when he discovered his parents’ bodies in the burger bar.
Allen’s lawyer, Mohammad Sakr, confirmed his client had been filmed on the roof of the building earlier that morning and asked corrections services to carry out a mental health assessment before he faces court again in the new year.
“Every defendant deserves representation and every defendant deserves to be in the justice system,” he said today.
Allen was refused bail and will spend Christmas in custody after failing to appear in court today.
Acting Detective Constable Michael Cantrell said police were examining social media footage yesterday.
“I’m aware there’s footage out there and it’s gone through social media and we’re looking into it,” Cantrell said.
“Indicates a male nearby. The hour has not yet been confirmed, but it is certainly a line of inquiry.’
Locals in Cambridge Park were left distraught and paid tribute to the pair, with their burger bar turned into a shrine.
Flowers and hand-written cards were left in the window of Buzzy Bee’s Burger House on Oxford Street.
“For 29 years, seven days a week, rain, hail or shine, they devoted their lives to this place,” reads one note.
“They didn’t deserve this. I pray you both rest easy. We are hurt, we will miss you.”
The store remains a crime scene.
9News understands the couple suffered multiple stab wounds.
