Storms bring intense rainfall, causing flooding over parts of the countries south-east

Australia’s east coast continues to be cleaned up after strong storms caused flash floods, swamping cars and forcing drivers to call for help.

A violent thunderstorm broke out on Sunday Brisbaneturning roads into rivers and flooding cars.

More than 50mm was recorded in 30 minutes in Brisbane City, while surrounding suburbs took the brunt with 70mm falling in Rosalie in one hour and 77mm in Holland Park West.

Further south, Upper Springbrook on Gold Coast recorded more than 260 mm of rain in the last 24 hours.

“While the totals may not have been particularly massive, they have declined very quickly,” Daniel Hayes of the Bureau of Meteorology told AAP on Monday.

“Given that we had a significant amount of rain the day before and we’ve had quite a bit of rain over the previous couple of weeks, pretty much everything that fell yesterday ran off and that led to the flash flooding that we saw.”

Video footage showed water turning Brisbane’s Roma Street into a river, while southern suburbs such as East Brisbane and Stones Corner turned into lakes due to flooding.

Weatherzone’s Brett Dutschke said the Highvale rainfall total in the Moreton Bay area – 128mm – was the highest December day in more than 60 years.

Meanwhile, Sydney more than 25mm of rain fell in an hour as wild weather threw train services into chaos on Sunday.

Affluent suburbs in the city’s east suffered flash flooding, with videos capturing the moment restaurants in Bondi flooded and streets in Double Bay flooded.

The NSW SES responded to almost 200 calls for help, including a family rescued from a car hit by a tree during a thunderstorm.

Victoria and Tasmania also saw heavy rainfall totals, with Cape Nelson recording 57mm – the highest December day in 25 years – and 40mm in Canberra, the most significant December day in 10 years, Weatherzone said.

The bureau says the worst of the wet weather is over for Sydney and Brisbane with a significant storm escalating across northern South Australia and the Northern Territory on Monday.

“It’s actually quite active through those areas right now, along the bottom line, and that’s going to continue for most of the day,” Hayes said.

“This activity then moves into western NSW and western Queensland, and western Victoria later in the day and into tomorrow.”

A severe thunderstorm warning is also in place for north Queensland around Georgetown with 50mm of rain in 30 minutes at Brennans Knob on Monday morning.
